Hawaii is a state in the western United States, located on the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from the mainland United States. It is the only U.S. state outside of North America, the only state that is an archipelago, and the only state that is geographically located in the tropics.
Hawaii comprises almost the entire Hawaiian archipelago, 137 volcanic islands spanning 1,500 miles (2,400 km) that are physiographically and ethnographically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.[11] As a result, the state's ocean coastline is the fourth longest in the United States, at about 750 miles (1,210 km). and Hawaii - the last of these, after which the state is named, is often called the "Big Island" or "Island of Hawaii" to avoid confusion with the state or archipelago. The uninhabited islands of northwestern Hawaii make up most of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, the largest protected area in the United States and the fourth largest in the world.
Due to its fertile soil and unique tropical climate in the United States, historically dominated by a farm economy, Hawaii remains a major exporter of agricultural products. With its diverse natural scenery, tropical climate, abundance of public beaches, oceanic environments, active volcanoes and clear skies on the Big Island, the state attracts tourists, surfers and scientists from around the world. Hawaii is home to the US Pacific Fleet, the world's largest naval command, as well as 75,000 Department of Defense employees.
Although its relative isolation results in one of the highest costs of living in the United States, Hawaii is the third richest state.
