JAPAN // As one of the few ports open to foreign trade during two centuries of Japan's self-imposed isolation, the city of Nagasaki has long been historically significant. But for most it is known for 9 August 1945, when it became the second city in the world to be devastated by an atomic bomb. Its sombre Atomic Bomb Museum recounts the destruction through salvaged remains and photos, but perhaps most moving are the firsthand accounts from survivors, who tell stories of both great terror and great heroism.
