Find humbling stories of survival at the War Childhood Museum

BOSNIA & HERCEGOVINA // A burned book, a handmade doll, humanitarian-aid food cans, ballet shoes... All exhibits in this deeply moving Sarajevo museum are personal belongings from survivors of the siege the city endured during the devastating 1990s civil war. Each token of a harrowing childhood experience is accompanied by an emotional reminiscence written by the person who donated it. The museum's concept was born out of a 2013 book edited by Jasminko Halilovic, who asked the siege survivors to encapsulate their own memories of growing up during the Bosnian war. The result is an eclectic collection that tells a powerful story of suffering and hope, from the perspective of those most vulnerable and least responsible for the tragedy - the children of Sarajevo.
