Admire art at the end of the world at MONA

AUSTRALIA // Watch dolphins play as you arrive by motorboat to Tasmania's fabulously eccentric Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), built into a cliff on the River Derwent near Hobart. Commissioned by millionaire professional gambler David Walsh as a way to give back to his home city, MONA opened to much acclaim in 2011. Visitors wander the maze-like underground space with headphones, which replace traditional museum labels. Exhibits range from ancient Egyptian sarcophagi and Stone Age pottery to avant-garde sound-and-light sculptures, eclectically positioned without regard to time period or genre. Outdoors, sip wine from the surrounding vineyard while gawking at enormous installation pieces. You can even sleep in ultra-modern riverside lodges decorated with art from the MONA collection.
