Feel the wild Atlantic force at Cabo de São Vicente
PORTUGAL // Until the late 14th century, the lonely, wind-battered headland of Cabo de São Vicente at Europe's southwesternmost tip was the end of the world. Then along came the bold Prince Henry the Navigator, with an aching desire to set sail to far-off countries in search of sugar, spice and all things nice. The high cliffs of this cape would have been the last thing he glimpsed as he caught the breeze and drifted towards the unknown in the storm-tossed Atlantic. With wide- open horizons, crashing waves, a blinking lighthouse and the occasional fisher precariously dangling a line from the cliffs, the cape still feels wild and remote today. Come to see the sinking sun silhouette the headland that played such a pivotal role in maritime history.
