Have a Star Wars- style sleep in Matmata
TUNISIA // Star Wars fans may come just on a film-inspired pilgrimage, but this village of underground pit houses is more than just the stage for Luke Skywalker's home. Because of the intense Saharan heat, the Berbers who live here have long sought shelter by carving ingenious dwellings below the surface. Today, many of the houses can be visited and also function as simple hotels. The most well-known dwelling is the Hotel Sidi Driss, which stood in for the Lars family homestead in the original Star Wars and is still littered with bits of the set. Roaming the lunarscape surface, pockmarked by troglodyte trenches, and then spending the night cocooned in your very own cave is the closest you'll come on earth to the experience of sleeping in outer space.
