Here, cobblestone streets wriggle past Renaissance churches, baroque palaces and medieval squares, while spice-coloured buildings sag like wizened old men. Founded in 1252, Gamla Stan has been blackened by plague and famine, consumed by flames when the castle of Tre Kronor was burned to the ground, and embattled by Danish and Swedish factions. The innocent-looking square of Stortorget was the scene of a bloodbath in 1520 when a Danish king tricked, trapped and beheaded 82 rebellious Swedes. Dominating the skyline and teetering above Gamla Stan, Storkyrkan is the old town's medieval cathedral and one-time royal coronation venue; inside you'll find a dramatic 15th-century depiction of St George, wrestling his legendary dragon. Nearby, Kungliga Slottet is the official residence of the King of Sweden.
