Spot rare monkeys, manatees and toucans in Mamirauá reserve
BRAZIL// The rare white uakari monkey has a white coat and a bulbous red face, and is found nowhere else on Earth. It's one of the reasons the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve is here. The reserve encompasses moist forest and várzea, a forest ecosystem of floodplains and seasonal mud islands. Come here to spot the uakari, as well as jungle critters including toucans, sloths, coatis and anteaters. Follow an indigenous guide on walks along the boggy riverbanks, binoculars bobbing at your neck, or canoe the flooded forest, crossing your fingers for a manatee sighting. In June and July, the extremely lucky might even glimpse a jaguar slinking by. Stay at the Pousada Vacari ecolodge, built on floating logs - sustainable travel at its best.
