Clamber through Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

SLOVENIA // Slovenia's subterraneous Postojna region has an enviable swag bag of attractions. First, there's brooding Predjama Castle, wedged into the gaping mouth of a cavern halfway up a 123m-high (404ft) cliff, looking unconquerable. Drawbridge? Tick. Dank dungeon? Tick. Ancient treasure haul? Tick. Less than 10km (6 miles) down the road, the awesome karst cave of Postojna swallows crowds in a series of caverns, halls and passages some 20km (12 miles) long and two million years old. These subterranean systems harbour the unusual and totally blind olm - a vertebrate endemic to southeastern Europe's karst, and the world's largest exclusively cave-dwelling animal.
