Relish the visionary architecture and food stalls of Rotterdam's Markthal
THE NETHERLANDS // Roaming Rotterdam's streets feels like strolling through a gallery of modern architecture. Razed during WWll, it offered a blank canvas for a no-holds-barred building spree that's continued ever since. An eye-catching addition is the 2014-opened Markthal (market hall). Shaped like an enormous horseshoe, the 40m-high (130ft) building's apartments arc over a soaring interior space with a 11,000-sq-metre (118,400-sq-ft) mural (the world's largest artwork) featuring outsized fruit and vegetables, which is splayed across its glass walls and ceiling. Dozens of stalls sell cheeses, herring and waffles, plus international dishes for on-the-spot snacking. Behind-the-scenes tours can take you into the logistics centre, refrigeration rooms and one of the apartments, and introduce you to stallholders (with tastings too).
