Bask in the awesome presence of Cerro Aconcagua

ARGENTINA // Standing proud among the Andean Mountains that divide Argentina and Chile, awe-inspiring Aconcagua attracts climbers from all over the world. Those who manage to summit the tallest peak outside Asia can claim to have stood atop the 'roof of the Americas', but at nearly 7000m (22,965ft), the altitude and severe weather conditions make this a challenging climb. It was in the shadow of Aconcagua that in 1817 General José de San Martin and his army crossed the Andes to help liberate Chile from the Spanish, and in 1985, climbers discovered an Incan mummy at 5300m on the mountain's southern face. Unless you're an experienced climber, the jagged, humpbacked peak of Aconcagua - particularly pretty in the pink glow of sunset - is best admired from a distance.
