NAMIBIA // As you approach the headland housing the world's largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals, you'll first hear the barking, and then notice the odour. Very rotund from an abundant diet of fish, and very uninhibited, the seals lounge all over the beach and rocks, some individually, others piled on top of each other, and they fill the offshore waters. In peak breeding season from November to December, their numbers can reach 200,000. Don't attempt to touch them. Apart from not being sound practice environmentally, seals can be temperamental, especially when on land, and have been known to nip humans who venture too close. Near the main seal area is a replica of the stone cross erected in 1485 by Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão, which gives the headland its name.
