Float through Avatar's mountains in Zhangjiajie

CHINA // The quartz spires and soaring craggy peaks of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park are said to have been the inspiration for Pandora in the movie Avatar and it's not difficult to imagine why. The mountains here rise into strange columns of rock dusted by greenery, their peaks shrouded in clouds. This is the stuff of classical Chinese paintings - if a dragon soared by, would you even look twice? The 4810-hectare (11,900-acre) national park is a Unesco-listed global geopark that forms part of the giant Wulingyuan World Heritage Site. Within are hundreds of peaks, caves, trails and valleys to explore. The mythical pillar-peaks here may feel like something outside of time and space, but Zhangjiajie is also full of modern superlatives. The world's tallest outdoor lift - Bailong ('Hundred Dragons') Elevator - zips sightseers up and down a sheer cliff face. The planet's longest and highest pedestrian glass bridge offers views of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon from on high. And the world's second-longest cable car floats up a staggering 7.5km (5 miles) from downtown Zhangjiajie to the top of Tianmen Mountain.
