It follows the rainforest edge along stunning white-sand Lavena beach, passes peaceful palm-thatched villages, crosses a rickety suspensiobridge and traverses the ancient valley of Wainibau Creek, with scenery straight out of Jurassic Park. Just as you think the tropical heat is becoming unbearable, the finale: a gushing waterfall. That first dive into the cool, deep waters feels like a piece of heaven.

How long does it take to walk the coastal path?

The route is 630 miles (1014 km) long. In terms of walking days, a fast walker can complete the entire trail in around 30 days, but a more leisurely pace with time to stop to see some sights just off the trail is between 7 and 8 weeks.
