Contemplate the tragedy of war in Flanders Fields

BELGIUM // Over four blood-soaked years along the Western Front during WWI, almost a whole generation of young men perished amid themud, barbed wire and trenches. There's no single place called Flanders Fields - the name comes from a haunting poem by John McCrae – but the war cemeteries and memorials that straddle the French-Belgian border stand as silent witnesses to the deaths here. As well as statues, arches and endless avenues of neat white crosses, red poppies appear across the countryside every summer like the ghosts of the fallen.
