LUXEMBOURG // For such a tiny country, Luxembourg has a profusion of fortifications. In its capital, Luxembourg City, spectacularly set across plunging river gorges, the Bock Casemates fortress was raised by Count Siegfried in AD 983, with rock galleries and passages that were carved by the Spaniards in 1644. It was superseded over the centuries by a string of forts and castles tasked with protecting the Duchy's fabulous wealth. Today, wandering the castles is a tour through the ages.
