Walk the laneways of an ancient Silk Road fortress in Ichon-Qala
Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of the city of Khiva, Uzbekistan. Since 1990, it has been protected as a World Heritage Site. The old town retains more than 50 historic monuments and 250 old houses, dating primarily from the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries.

UZBEKISTAN // The fnal resting stop for traders and caravans heading into the desert before they moved south to Persia, the city of khiva was one of the Silk Road's most important oasis towns. Khiva's preserved and restored 'inner town', the Ichon-Qala is more than a fort - it's an entire city of mud-brick medressas, mosques and minarets situated along laneways and courtyards, much as it would have been 600 years ago. As with all of Uzbekistan's monuments, the Soviets went to great effort to restore and rebuild Khiva from disrepair, and today it is a drawcard Silk Road site
