See the pyramids without the crowds at peaceful Dahshur

EGYPT // Home of Egypt's first true pyramid, Dahshur is just as impressive as Giza but far more peaceful. The two main pyramids on the desert plains here were built by Pharaoh Sneferu, father of Khufu, who went on to raise Giza's Great Pyramid. Sneferu's Red Pyramid (named for the hue of its weathered limestone) has long been the highlight, with a steep claustrophobic shaft leading down into the burial chamber. Until recently, you could only admire Sneferu's nearby Bent Pyramid (with its wonky sides that incline first at 54 and then 43 degrees) from outside, but in mid-2019 Egypt opened up the interior to visitors for the first time. Now you get to clamber into two pyramids without the Giza crowds.
