Discover Laos' answer to Angkor at Vat Phou
LAOS // Laos is better known for laid-back escapes than ancient ruins, but at Wat Phu, you get both. This formidable complex of Khmer-era temples is tucked away in pristine jungle on the bank of the Mekong River. The tumbledown pavilions, graceful carvings and tall trees give Wat Phu a mystical atmosphere, and it's still a place of worship today. While it lacks the enormity of Angkor Wat, the few visitors and dramatic natural setting help make Wat Phu an impressive, soulful alternative.
