Test your nerve on the cliff-hugging Caminito del Rey
SPAIN // The Caminito del Rey was never meant to be a tourist attraction; it was built in 1905 to allow workers to access the hydroelectric power plants that were wedged into this impossibly steep gorge. It was crowned with its current name, the King's Path, after King Alfonso XIlI walked it to inaugurate the dam in 1921. By the 1990s, the path had fallen into severe disrepair - entire sections of concrete and handrails had dropped off the rockface - and was labelled the most dangerous hike in the world after several daredevils attempted to traverse it and not all survived. After an extensive overhaul, a new path made of wooden slats opened in 2015. The views of the vertiginous gorge and the walkway clinging to the cliff as it snakes through the canyon are out of this world.
