SCOTLAND // Stirling Castle's history takes in numerous monarchs, eight sieges and some serious skulduggery, and visiting is a wonderfully vivid experience. Set above the city's Old Town, with a sheer drop on its western side, it mixes formidable battlements with charming gardens, and hidden nooks with bright tapestries. There's plenty for the eyes to feast on, from the joyfully colourful restored Royal Palace to careful archaeological displays and splendid views across the ramparts to the Highlands.
