GREECE // If you are cutting yourself off from worldly temptations it makes sense to do so somewhere that Mother Nature offers other consolations. So it is with the monasteries of Meteora (variously translated as 'suspended in the air' or 'in the heavens above'), set on giant spears of rock that burst forth from the fertile plains of Thessaly. There were originally 24 of these Greek Orthodox monasteries, built in the 16th century. They were only accessible by rope ladders, so for the novices in residence there was little to do but contemplate the beauty of God's creation. Today, there are only six monasteries open -now with stairs. And, overlooking the surrounding countryside you still get a feel for the rigours - and exaltation - of the monastic life.
