Let history wash over you at Bath's Roman Baths

ENGLAND // Baths are special things, and Bath's have been revered for millennia. Among the finds at this gorgeous ancient site - one of the world's best preserved Roman spas - are 12,000 coins and 130 curse tablets. The coins were flung into the hot spring in honour of the goddess Minerva; the Latin tablets wished dreadful punishments on anyone stealing valuables from blissed-out bathers. The Celts took the waters here, but it was the Romans who built the complex, with its lead-lined great pool, hypocaust and plunge pool. Vapours still rise from the Sacred Spring (a constant 46.5°C), but you can't take a dip here any more. Instead, wander the terraces and admire the statues and digital reconstructions. Then explore the museum, and seek out its two famous heads - a bronze Minerva and a stone gorgon.
