Wander through bygone centuries on Mozambique Island
The Island of Mozambique sits off Mozambique's north coast. It's connected to the mainland by a bridge. Portuguese colonial structures in Stone Town, the northern half of the island, include the Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte. The 16th-century Fort of São Sebastião crowns a headland nearby. The Palace of São Paulo is a former governor's home with a museum. Thatched-roof Macuti houses dot the south of the island.

Wander through bygone centuries on Mozambique Island
MOZAMBIQUE // Tiny in size, powerful in presence, this island - for centuries, the capital of Portuguese East Africa - has enchanted all who have stepped ashore since Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498. The European governors and Arab traders may have gone, but relics of the past loom large, including the 16th-century Fort of São Sebastião, and the Palace and Chapel of São Paulo. A lively fishing community still calls the island home; see their colourful nets drying on small beaches, stroll across once-grand praças, and take in the rich mix of influences.
