Plunge into the life aquatic in the Bay of Islands

NEW ZEALAND // Mäori were already ensconced in the Bay of Islands well before Europeans sailed in and claimed the area as the 'birthplace of the nation'. It was the site of New Zealand's first capital (1840-41). and the place where the Treaty of Waitangi - the country's founding document - was signed. Its history is certainly interesting, but natural beauty is what makes the Bay so appealing. Around 150 undeveloped islands are sprinkled throughout harbours and hidden coves awash with shimmering turquoise waters, which are rich in marine life. It's brilliant for an oceanic outing, with the signature trip being a Hole in the Rock cruise. Among a raft of other options are fishing charters, kayaking, snorkelling and scuba diving.
