Indulge in the good life on Waiheke Island

NEW ZEALAND // Waiheke is a favoured weekend getaway for wealthy boho Aucklanders, and no wonder. The golden light slanting across the vineyards rivals Tuscany's, the beaches are near-tropical blue and the modernist clifftop homes would satisfy any tech millionaire aesthete. Spend a few days swanning around art galleries, sipping local Cabernets at wine bars, noshing on tapas at ivy-draped garden restaurants and strolling trails through nature reserves. In December, make your way to the island's bottom end, when pohutukawa trees bloom crimson over Man o' War Bay, one of Waiheke's primo swimming spots. For beachcombing, sunbathing, barbecuing and sandcastles, Onetangi Beach's 2km (1.2-mile) stretch of white sand is top-notch - there's even a discreet nudist section around the headland. Bikes are a great way to get around, but beware the hills!
