Scuba dive into Mu Koh Similan's softcoral paradise
THAILAND // Imagine encountering an underwater world straight out of Finding Nemo. Sunlight dapples amazingly clear turquoise water, illuminating banks of gently swaying soft corals around which swim dazzlingly colored tropical fish. Flipper- kick your way through dramatic underwater gorges alongside schools of sharks and barracudas. No wonder the Mu Koh Similan National Park is Thailand's premier dive spot. Embracing an archipelago of 11 islands adrift in the Andaman Sea, this is a fragile world; coral bleaching has killed off many hard corals. The park is closed to the public from approximately mid-May to mid-October and overnight stays on the islands are also banned to help protect the ecosystem. It is possible to visit for the day, though, if you want to go hiking, snorkelling or simply work on your tan on the superb, palm-fringed beaches.
