Track the paths of gods on the Kumano Kodo

JAPAN // From ancient times the Japanese believed the wilds of the Kii Peninsula to be inhabited by gods. To hike through here was an act of worship of nature that attracted ascetics, nobles and retired emperors. Today people from all walks of life take to the World Heritage pilgrimage route known as the Kumano Kodo, but even the modern traveller can achieve something of a spiritual experience here. The Kumano Kodo is not just one route but a network that criss- crosses the peninsula, leading through groves of towering pines, across farmland and along the coast, taking in grand shrines, onsen towns and waterfalls - including Nachi-no-taki, the tallest waterfall in Japan.
