Hike up Table Mountain from the city below

SOUTH AFRICA // While some cities have signature buildings or artificial monuments, Cape Town has a trademark mountain. Watching the clouds accumulate on Table Mountain's plateau and then spill over its sides - a phenomenon known as the "tablecloth' effect - is a genuinely bankable travel moment. You can catch a cable car up the flat-topped mountain's front face; it slowly rotates en route, giving 360-degree views. However, it's better to earn the panoramic view across South Africa's most vibrant city and the table's rocky bookends, Lion's Head and Devil's Peak. Various hiking paths take you to different vantage points. The classic climb follows Platteklip Gorge, in the footsteps of António de Saldanha, who made the first recorded ascent in 1503. For the best city views, cross the tabletop from the tip of Platteklip and the upper Cableway station to the mountain's highest point, Maclear's Beacon (1088m/3570ft). If your timing's right, you'll be able to join locals watching the full moon rising above the Hottentots Holland mountains to the east, after hiking through the evening to the 669m-high (2195ft) Lion's Head.
