Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa, known as Burj Dubai before its opening in 2010, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This building is known as the tallest building in the world. Burj Khalifa has an overall height of 829.8 meters (2,722 ft or just over half a mile) and a ceiling height (excluding the antenna, but including a 223-meter minaret[2]) of 828 meters (2,717 ft). The world's tallest structure and building since its construction in 2009, succeeding Taipei 101, the previous holder of this status.
The building opened in 2010 as part of a new development called Downtown Dubai. It is designed to be the center of a large-scale, mixed-use development. The decision to build this building was based on the government's decision to diversify the oil-based economy and to gain Dubai's international reputation.
This building is named in honor of the former president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Built by a team led by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the firm that designed the Sears Tower in Chicago, Burj Khalifa held the previous record for the tallest building in the world. Hyder Consulting was selected as Supervising Engineer with NORR Group Consultants International Limited to oversee the project architecture. This design is derived from the Islamic architecture of the region, such as the Grand Mosque of Samara. The three-sided Y-shaped floor geometry is designed to optimize residential and hotel space. A central core and strong wings are used to support the height of the building. Although the design is derived from the Palace of Burj III, the central core of the Burj Khalifa houses all means of vertical transportation except the exit stairs in each of the wings. The structure also has a metal cladding system designed to withstand the hot summer temperatures of Dubai. In total, it includes 57 elevators and 8 escalators.
