Lerwick Up Helly Aa is a great show, a celebration of Shetland's history, and a triumphant display of the skills and spirit of the islanders. Run entirely by volunteers, this Northern Mardi Gras lasts just one day (and all night).
From January to mid-March, it's Up Helly Aa - or Fire Festival - season in Shetland. There are 12 in total. Lerwick Up Helly Aa attracts a global audience, but smaller festivals are also held in communities across the islands, including in Unst in the north, Bressay in the east, and across mainland Shetland.
Up Helly Aa is a legendary festival in Scotland to celebrate the arrival of the Vikings. It is an ancient fire festival that salutes the Vikings who colonized this part of Europe in the 8th century. This part of Scotland remained a province of Norway until 1472.
