Lewes Bonfire, or Bonfire for short, describes a series of celebrations held in Lewes, Sussex, England, which form the UK's largest and most famous bonfire night celebrations, and Lewes has been called the bonfire capital of the world.
 
Always held on November 5 (unless the 5th falls on a Sunday, in which case it falls on Saturday the 4th), the event not only marks Guy Fawkes Night - the date the Gunpowder Plot was discovered in 1605 - but also It is also a memorial. Remembering the seventeen Protestant martyrs from the city who were burned in the fire because of their faith during the Marian persecution.
 
Lewes is home to the biggest and most famous celebrations in the Sussex bonfire tradition. There are seven societies holding six separate parades and fireworks displays across Lewes on November 5. In addition, 25 to 30 guilds from across Sussex come to Lewes on the fifth day to march in the streets. This could mean up to 5,000 people attending the festivities and up to 80,000 spectators in the county's market town with a population of just over 17,000.
