MassKara Festival Philippines
Bacolod, known as the City of Smiles, hosts one of the most important festivals in the Philippines: the MassKara Festival. While the name translates to "Many Faces," which is expressed through smiling masks and elaborate costumes, the backstory isn't so happy.
Born out of a crisis, the festival was created in hopes of uplifting people during the 1980s. Faced with an economic crisis and a tragic ship accident in which many prominent families lost their members, the local community came together to overcome the challenges. Colorful beaded masks, vibrant hats and whimsical costumes all tell a story of resilience.
