Montreal is the largest city in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is located on an island in the St. Lawrence River and takes its name from Mount Royal, the three-peaked hill at its heart. Its sections, many of which were once independent cities, include neighborhoods from the French colonial Vieux Montréal—with its Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral—to the unorthodox Plateau.
