Ponder the beauty of Roman engineering at Segovia's aqueduct

SPAIN // It's a testament to Roman design aesthetics that their greatest engineering projects double up as handsome pieces of architecture. Contemporary Segovia, like any modern city, gets its water from a web of underground pipes, but in the 1st century AD it was dispensed via an elegant aqueduct of single and double arches that rose 28m (92ft) above the surrounding townscape. Built to last, using over 20,000 granite blocks but not a drop of mortar, the Acueducto still dominates Segovia's city centre, its formidable arches standing as a lasting reminder of Roman ingenuity. So enduring was the stone watercourse that it continued to supply the city with water until well into the 19th century, 1800 years after it was built.

Segovia is a historic city northwest of Madrid, in the Castile and León region of central Spain. Centuries of habitation have resulted in a rich architectural heritage, including medieval walls, Romanesque churches, a former royal palace and a Gothic cathedral. Its iconic ancient Roman aqueduct has more than 160 arches, most of which are made of granite without the original mortar, and sits above Plaza Azúgojo in the heart of the city.

Why is Segovia famous?

The city is famous for its historic buildings, including three main landmarks: the Roman aqueduct in the center of the city, its cathedral (one of the last in Europe to be built in the Gothic style), and the medieval castle, which served as one of the models for Walt Disney's Cinderella Castle.
