INDIA // It is at Varanasi's smouldering ghats (riverside steps), lining the waters of the Ganges, that India's holiest city is at its most spiritually enlightening. Throughout the day, families bid a very public farewell to their deceased relatives at the burning cremation pyres here; at dawn, lone pilgrims perform silent prayers to the rising sun. At sunset, the city's main gang aarti (river worship ceremony) takes place at Dashashwamedh, making this Varanasi's liveliest and most colourful ghat.
